Getting Ready for Goodbye

This is our last weekend with Daisy. We've finally made the decision to put her down and release her from the discomfort she's been feeling for the last year or so.

It's been hard to arrive at this point. She's a sweet little dog and we're all going to miss her. But her life has really telescoped in on her lately and we were finally able to say that we wanted more for her.

So we're spending a lot of time with her, giving her special treats (eating is her favorite pasttime) and calling off her diet which we imposed on her in an effort to alleviate her pain from arthritis. She can't see, can barely hear, has difficulty walking and falls down a lot. Next Friday she'll be back with Jake, whom we lost March 2007, and was her best friend. She's been a good friend, a good dog and a sweet little companion. She will be missed, but not before we have a week to remember!

I can still remember putting my dog down after we were married. I got him for Christmas when I was 12 and he was 13 when it was time. He could not see or hear and peed everywhere-poor thing. I cried for days, but I couldn't stand to see him that way and I know it was the right thing to do. Enjoy your time with her and cry all you want!!

What a terribly difficult choice to have to make. Even if it's for the best, it is still SOOOO hard to say "good-bye". My heart is with you and your family.

Oh Maureen, I'm sorry. I still remember when we had to put our dog down. He was so sick and not able to enjoy life anymore. My Mom always said that you should pick three things your dog really loves and when they are too sick to do those things anymore, then it is time to let them go. We all cried for days, but we knew it was the right thing to do for our dog. I know you'll make this week really special for Daisy. Let us know if we can help with anything.

I have such sweet friends! Thank you for all your comments. We ARE enjoying our last few days with Daisy--lots of hugs, walkies and special treats. I think she's in beagle heaven. A friend who works with the Humane Society in Austin told me she thinks of this as setting her free. I think so too, an we are all at peace.
